Take
a wither pattern or make a template
Ideally use a long flexi-curve drafting
or DIY shape tool, but a straightened wire coat-hanger or a piece of thick electrical wire about
3ft
long will do, and 2 x A4 sheets of paper side-to-side or 1 x A3 sheet if
you have any.
Fit the wire over the withers about
2" (2-3 finger widths) behind the shoulder-blade and bend it to conform to the horse's
shape then trace the outline onto the paper.
Straighten the wire and do it again to
check. If you get a different result try a third time and take the 2 closest patterns
which should give you a good average.
(If they all come out
different keep trying until you are satisfied that it is consistent).
For a more accurate measurement trace
the outline onto a piece
of plain or corrugated cardboard (or plastic equivalent) and cut along the shape then
try it on the horse and make any necessary adjustments by trimming.
Although only a rough guide this
usually proves remarkably accurate, and gives us
a good idea what to advise and
whether sending a saddle to try will be worthwhile.
